Eat Out Restaurant Review: Joe’s Cafe

Joe's Cafe

What’s better than a fantastic breakfast?  A fantastic breakfast served up with a friendly smile and some Southern hospitality, or course.  And you don’t have to venture far to get it (at least, if you’re in Utah County).  Just stop by Joe’s Cafe right across the street from University Mall on State Street in Orem.  You’ll find Joe, himself, taking orders, in the kitchen, or giving hugs and hi-fives to customers as they take a picture.

Joe's Cafe Interior

The pictures wallpaper the walls of Joe’s Cafe, which is an unassuming little spot that can be quite busy at mealtimes.  Joe’s welcoming environment and homestyle food definitely has his customers coming back for more.

We arrived around lunchtime on Saturday, knowing breakfast was served all day.  However, the legendary biscuits & gravy and the grits were already done for the day.  They quite serving them around 11 or 11:30, so don’t make the mistake we did if you want to try these signature items.

Joe's Cafe Pancake Combo

Pancake Combo ($7.79) – This is advertised as “3 pancakes, 2 eggs, & 2 bacon or sausage”, but as you can see it is a huge, shareable plate of silver dollar pancakes…seriously, there are at least 15 pancakes here!  They are fluffy and buttery, probably cooked in a cast iron skillet.  The eggs are made to order.  Mine were scrambled and very fluffy, but with little seasoning.  The sausage was a little dry…go with the bacon.

Joe's Cafe Joe's Omelet

Joe’s Omelet ($8.49) – Bacon, sausage, ground beef, green peppers, onions, & mushrooms folded into a fluffy egg omelet with melted cheese on top.  Served with crisp hash browns.  This omelet was loaded with wonderful fillings that resulted in a smoky-cheesy sensation.

 Jr Belguim Waffle Combo

Jr. Belgian Waffle Combo ($3.99) – Half a Belgian waffle with both bacon and sausage.  The waffle is wonderful; it’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.  I think it probably has cornmeal in it.  The bacon is thick-cut and smoky…delicious!

Joe's Cafe Jr Belguim Waffle with Fruit Topping

Jr. Belgian Waffle with Fruit Topping ($3.49) – Half a waffle with your choice of blueberry or strawberry topping and whipped cream.  The waffle holds up well under toppings.

Joe's Cafe French Dip

French Dip ($7.69) – Sliced roast beef on a soft bun served with hot au jus, wavy potato chips, & pickle spears.  Fairly typical, but good.

Joe’s is a great, friendly spot for a homestyle breakfast or lunch (sandwiches, salads, & burgers).  We absolutely loved the breakfast options and recommend going with the omelets, Belgian waffles, & bacon.  The pancakes were good, but I liked the other options even better.  The portions are huge and that plate of silver dollar pancakes can be split among 2-3 people.  We will definitely be back at regular breakfast hours to try the biscuits & gravy and grits.  Have you tried them?  Follow Joe’s Cafe on Facebook to keep up with the latest; once in a while they close for a day or weekend.

We bought a discount certificate through Restaurant.com, but now I don’t see any for Joe’s Cafe available.  Keep checking and see if they pop back up…a great deal for a great breakfast spot!
