Kari over at Newlyweds on a Budget was hit by a drunk driver five months ago. She is still recovering, but has taken the issue by the horns and taking a stand against drunk driving and inviting bloggers to do the same this week in a Bloggers Against Drunk Drivers campaign. You can read her story on her blog.
Just last month, my sister-in-law and her husband were hit by a drunk driver on Christmas. It totaled their car and caused bruises, scrapes, cuts, and lots of emotional trauma, but could have been SO much worse (especially since he had a huge dually with a trailer). I am so grateful they are okay.
So many people are not okay. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) an estimated 10,228 people died in drunk driving accidents in 2010, accounting for 31% of all traffic deaths that year. Over 10,000 people whose deaths were completely avoidable if only a driver had decided not to take the wheel in their hands after having a drink.
If you haven’t yet, commit now that you will not ever get behind the wheel after having a drink. If you have been affected by drunk driving, please add your story and conviction in a comment.
