Eat Out Elko Review: Sergio’s Mexican Restaurant

Okay.  I know Elko, Nevada isn’t a big dining hub, but if you drive back and forth between Northern California and Utah, it’s one of only a few decent-sized towns along the way.  On such a trip, we stopped in Elko overnight and wanted to try a local place for dinner.  We chose Sergio’s Mexican Restaurant ‘cause we were in the mood for some chips & salsa.

When we walked into Sergio’s, we noticed a plain interior with a small salsa bar on one side and an order counter at the back with pictures of various dishes taped up on the wall behind it.  There were a few people seated inside and an occasional person coming in to pick up a take-out order.  We stepped up and placed an order, which he said would be delivered to our table. 

Meanwhile, we decided to help ourselves to the salsa bar.  The salsa bar should have been a sign of things to come; it was very messy and seemed neglected.  It featured a salsa and a peppers slaw.  The salsa was not very flavorful.

We waited quite a while for our food and noticed the owner (who seemed to be the only one working at the time) chatting more than he was serving customers or cooking food.  I’m sure many of the customers are regulars and friends of his, but we felt frustrated waiting so long while watching him have lengthy conversations at other tables.

Eventually our food came.

Beef Burrito – Okay, but not much flavor even though it was smothered.  It had quite a bit of fat on the meat.

Beef Chimichanga – The beef was very fatty to the point that I lost my appetite.  Rice was unflavorful.  Guacamole was thin and almost seemed watery.

Beef Tacos – These weren’t bad, but still not very impressive.

Kids Hamburger – This was huge for a kids portion, but had nothing on it and had a dry, hard bun.

Our experience at Sergio’s was definitely at the bottom of our list.  Sweet Diner took a trip to the restroom and said it was very dirty.  Between the bathroom and the salsa bar, it made us wonder how well the rest of the place was taken care of.  None of us would go back to Sergio’s, but the locals seem to like it.
