Eat Out Review: Maria Bonita Grill

I have been on a quest for over a year now – to find a really great Mexican restaurant in Utah County. I know Los Hermanos is the city sweetheart, and I love their specialty drinks and salsa, but for me, the food is just okay…kind of bland, actually. So, we’ve tried some others during this past year – Joe Bandito’s, Cocolito’s, Mama Chu’s, Las Tarascas (now closed), Pastoreo Taco Grill (now closed).  A recent addition to our list: Maria Bonita Grill (171 W 800 N, Orem).

The interior is crowded, but the service is friendly, though some of the servers spoke little English. Really, to me, a nice interior is awesome, but what I’m there for is the food. I ordered the pork chimichanga (recommended by the server), Mr. Diner had the shredded beef burrito, and my little diners had quesadillas. They actually have an expansive menu with many choices for kids, as well.

Salsa was not my favorite…thin & watery with chunks of tomatoes…I like mine thicker so it sticks to the chips better. Before your entree comes out, they serve a chicken & rice soup…mostly broth with some rice. I liked it & it was different from most Mexican restaurants around here…and great on a cold day! The service was really quick and friendly. The entrees, rice, and beans were good, but nothing great. A big plus for me was not having it drowning in sour cream like some restaurants take the liberty to do.

So, I’m still on the search for a great Mexican place…next up to try – the new Milagros and El Gallo Giro. (See our review of El Gallo Giro here.) Any recommendations?
