Recently, we logged another attempt at our "Find a New Favorite Mexican Restaurant Quest". The subject this time? El Gallo Giro (Provo location on University Avenue). Though I really want to find a good "table service" restaurant (you know...you sit down & someone does everything for you...that's the kind of service every mom needs once in awhile!), this place fared pretty well in the food department. Good salsa - check. Good entrees - check. It's another hole-in-the wall place...crowded and an interior that feels thrown together, but we're here for the food, right? We went for lunch on a weekday and there were multiple emergency vehicles parked in front...this must be where the firefighters and paramedics go for lunch because we saw a steady crowd of emergency workers eating here...some would leave & others would arrive to take their place. When we walked in, there was no wait to order at the counter, but by the time we had our food, there was a line out the door. They give you a number to put on your table & bring your food to you.
For entrees, Mr. Diner ordered a smothered beef burrito and I had an employee's recommendations - a enchilada/burrito special with the meats she recommended - a pork/beef combo (yes, you can have a combination of 2 meats in one item...like a chicken-pork burrito). I thought the meats had great flavors and were excellent. The beans & rice they were served with were typical. Mr. Diner thought it was just okay because his meat was fatty. Mine was not...guess he just got a bad serving.
Anyway, prices are cheap with lunch specials as low as $3.99. Ours were about $6 each. Definitely going to go back for more. Next time, though, I want to try the mole!
